TOPIC A: NUCLEAR USAGES AND WASTE DISPOSAL
Topic introduction
Nuclear power plants is said to be a potential solution to economic development in destitute countries as well as a method to deal with climate change by cutting down reliance on fossil-fuel burning power plants. However, there are unpredictable hidden dangers with nuclear power generation. For instance, devastating accidents happened in Chernobyl and Fukushima indicates how nuclear power generation can create massive human and ecological problems that encompass huge long-term costs. SPECPOL should handle this issue with urgency as it is a latent tremendous matter but with sensitivity to the competing interests at stake. |
TOPIC b: DEALING WITH THE GROWTH OF SLUMS
Topic Introduction
For the first time in history, more than a half of the world’s population resides in cities, illustrating the popular movement to cities from rural areas during recent years. Over ninety percent of this urban growth takes place in developing countries. Around seventy million new residents are increasing in urban areas every year. However, while city life often affords its inhabitants with opportunities, it also contains negative circumstances that include overcrowded living, unemployment, congestion, stark inequalities, lack of social and community connections, and crippling societal issues such as crime and violence. Those who are harmed by the negative conditions are the occupants of urban slums. Currently it is reckoned that about one billion people live in urban slums. |
